LAC SEUL FIRST NATION, TREATY 3 TERRITORY — NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong) is calling on Doug Ford to hurry up with help for families who have been left on their own to evacuate their communities threatened by forest fires across northern Ontario.
“Doug Ford should have taken action long ago with fire preparations knowing that forest fires would be raging across Northwestern Ontario during the fire season. His lack of readiness has left people in danger and unsupported. He needs to move quickly now and provide emergency resources and coordinate the evacuation of families from multiple communities,” said Mamakwa.
People from Poplar Hill, and Deer Lake are being evacuated now. Red Lake, Pikangikum, Bearskin Lake, Sachigo Lake, and North Spirit Lake are preparing for potential evacuation.
“Vulnerable people and families, especially in fly-in communities, need help to leave their homes, and to be flown out of their communities and into nearby locations for safe shelter. Due to a lack of provincial emergency management, there is not enough air support or beds for evacuees. Doug Ford must make all aviation assets available now and provide more beds immediately. Insufficient provincial coordination of the evacuation also means families are being sent to southern Ontario thousands of kilometers from their homes,” said Mamakwa.
“Ford needs to take action now for emergency management of the evacuation and to save lives."
