Sol Mamakwa MPP for Kiiwetinoong

Government of Ontario

The numbers are in: MPP Mamakwa shares results of Time Observation Survey

Published on September 28, 2026

SIOUX LOOKOUT – Kiiwetinoong MPP and Ontario NDP Deputy Leader Sol Mamakwa has released poll results and responded to Manitoba's announcement that beginning on November 1, 2026, the province will no longer switch the clocks and will instead be observing 'permanent daylight time'.

"In Kiiwetinoong, this move is being met with concern for the impact it would have on the region. Most of northwestern Ontario (NWO) will now spend winters as an island of central daylight savings time. In a place where flights and appointments are already hard to come by, having a distinct time zone in northwestern Ontario risks causing further confusion for families trying to catch flights and attend appointments, as well as for business-related matters.

"My office launched an informal survey last week to hear directly from community members in Kiiwetinoong and across NWO regarding their preference for how the region should observe time going forward. Within a few days, over 1000 people from impacted First Nations and municipalities filled out the survey, and their response sent a clear message: the Ontario Government should align northwestern Ontario's time observation with the Province of Manitoba."
