Reconciliation depends on respecting treaties with Indigenous Peoples: MPP Sol Mamakwa

Published on November 7, 2018

NDP MPP for Kiiwetinoong, Sol Mamakwa, issued the following statement on Treaties Recognition Week.

“On behalf of Andrea Horwath and Ontario’s NDP, I want to encourage all Ontarians in joining us as we mark Treaties Recognition Week. New Democrats believe all Canadians are treaty people.

When I was sworn in as MPP for Kiiwetinoong, I felt it was important to include an oath that acknowledged our treaties. In honour of Treaties Recognition Week, I want to reaffirm my commitment. I repeat this oath to remind Ontarians that we all benefit when we honour, respect and uphold the treaties on which this province was founded.

I, Sol Mamakwa, solemnly affirm that, in the carrying out of my duties, I shall honour and respect the treaties signed with Indigenous Peoples.

It is important that we name the treaties, and that we recognize and honour the Crown’s commitments with Indigenous communities – only then can reconciliation happen.”
